Lidded Spice Jar
in Grained Paint

Likely Ohio, ca. 3rd quarter, 19th century, probably by Pease.

Skillfully lathe turned from maple, with grained paint over a mustard ground applied shortly after making, the mustard also applied to the interior. Although small, precisely turned unpainted woodenware from this period is relatively common, it is only occasionally that one is found with authentic period paint.

A very nice example with deep decorative turnings, urn-shaped, the top with integral finial/handle. Excellent structural condition without cracks. Wear and craquelure to the paint. About 4 3/8 inches tall. .
