Polychrome
Sponge Decorated
Pantry Box
Probably New England, ca. 1840.
Original very dry paint on pine. For pantry box lovers, this box is a find, with green, mustard, and bittersweet paints sponge-applied. Time and wear has produced a warm, soft, appealing aesthetic. Larger size at about 10 inches diameter x 5 1/8 tall. Good condition despite an old glue-repair at the bottom just to the left of the cut-nail joinery.
From a private collection purchased years ago from Ted and Carole Hayward (Yankee Smuggler Antiques).
